Postpartum haemorrhage: Cheap lifesaver 'cuts deaths by a third' By James Gallagher Health Check, BBC World Service A cheap drug has been shown to stop women bleeding to death, in a discovery that should change practice around the world, say researchers. Yearly, thousands of women die from excessive bleeding in the moments after giving birth. It's really sad that is more common in developing countries like Rwanda,Nigeria,Benin and so on. But an international study, in the Lancet, suggests "tranexamic acid" could cut that by a third. Postpartum haemorrhage is the most common cause of death within 6 weeks of motherhood. Nosheen, from Rawalpindi, in Pakistan who nearly died after the birth of her daughter, said 'I was given 41 bottles of blood' Nosheen's life was saved only by emergency surgical removal of her uterus called hysterectomy. On Thursday night, November 1, 2018, UBTH was thrown into mourning when they suddenly lost one of their medical doctors, a senior registrar in the Department of Surgery, Dr Egigba, right at the Accident & Emergency unit of the hospital late in the night. It was said that he had been doing a surgery in the operating room moments before then and only came to the A&E unit to review a patient before he slumped right there. The hospital's full squad converged at the scene within seconds. The consultants across every relevant specialty, especially Anaesthesia, were deployed. A full battery of rescucitation equipment and monitoring apparatus was used; the rescucitation efforts continued for far longer than even the textbooks say. In the end, every attempt failed. He passed away at the same hospital where he worked. Casey Amaefule recounted: All of us are terribly touched. Here was a man who knew all of us by our names, down to even the newest set of clinical medical st...
Nigerian Traditional Wedding Cakes When it comes to uniqueness and creativity in Nigerian Weddings, our traditional wedding cakes are way ahead of the game. For Cake Makers, baking a cake for a traditional wedding which is most commonly known as 'engagement' is a time to show off creativity and talents. We know for a certainty that everyone would always look forward to seeing them at these events. In the past, it used to be just common fruit baskets which was quite basic, but now, due to the work of art, traditional cakes are becoming more and more sophisticated, and of course, more interesting. Traditional wedding cakes are usually a showcase of the bride and bridegroom’s culture. So if they are Yoruba, the cakes usually would showcase Yoruba culture, Yoruba type of clothing and other aspects of Yoruba culture like the Traditional talking drums and the likes. If it's Igbo wedding, the cakes would be baked as appropriate. Nigerian cake makers are really exce...
Amid the rising number of cases and the refusal of some persons who test positive for COVID-19 to go to isolation centres, many states have said they will continue to treat the infected patients at isolation centres rather than resort to home treatment option. They noted that getting persons who had tested positive for the virus to the isolation centres remained one of their strategies to contain the spread of the deadly virus. Lagos State had on Thursday said it was considering adopting home treatment option for patients with mild symptoms, noting that it would soon release the guidelines for the treatment option. The state Commissioner for Health, Prof Akin Abayomi, said the decision to consider home treatment for some COVID-19 patients became necessary because some residents who tested positive for the COVID-19 refused to go to the state isolation centres and had been practising self-treatment in various places. He said, “There are people who are already pract...
