Corpses Burnt Beyond Recognition As Fire Guts Mortuary In Anambra

About 50 corpses were reportedly burnt beyond recognition in the fire which started at about 6pm on Saturday, December 29. Families and relatives who deposited their loved ones were left in shock following the incident, which to many still remain a mystery as no explanations were given as to the cause of the inferno at the mortuary. There were speculations that due to the harmattan period, the fire might have stemmed from a bush burning nearby and had grown extremely wild due to the chemicals used at the mortuary for the preservation of corpses. A spokesperson for the police command, SP Haruna Mohammed confirmed the incident and appealed to the people to remain calm, noting that investigations were already underway. ASUU strike will affect upcoming election- INEC explains

The Independent National Electoral Commission has raised alarm that the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities would affect its preparations for the 2019 elections. On November 5, 2018, ASUU began an indefinite strike action over the failure of the Federal Government to implement three areas in the Memorandum of Action it signed with the union on September 14, 2017.   On Thursday, a National Commissioner for INEC and Chairman of its Information and  other Education Committee, Festus Okoye, expressed concerns about the effect of the ASUU  strike on the 2019 elections  during the opening of a one-day seminar on media gender sensitive reporting. The commission said that it would deploy over one million ad hoc staff made up of lecturers in federal tertiary institutions, members of the National Youth Service Corps and students of federal tertiary institutions in the elections. Minimum wage: Labour Reacts as FG Denies Approving N30,000. "We Will Go Back To Strike"

The Federal Government said on Wednesday the N30,000 minimum wage proposal contained in the report of the tripartite committee set up by the Federal Government was still a recommendation and had not been approved. Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who spoke with State House correspondents after the weekly Federal Executive Council, said President Muhammadu Buhari would still study the report presented to him on Tuesday by the Chairman of the committee, Amal Pepple, before taking a decision on it. Pepple had while presenting the report on Tuesday disclosed that the committee recommended that the national minimum wage be increased from N18,000 monthly to N30,000. She also said her committee drafted a bill that the Federal Government would send to the National Assembly to effect the change. NLC suspends planned strike

The Leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress NLC and the Trade Union Congress TUC.have suspended its proposed nationwide strike which was slated for November 6th. The labour unions had planned to embark on an indefinite strike on Tuesday to press home their demands for an upward review of the minimum wage from N18, 000 to N30, 000. Rising from a meeting of the tripartite committee set up by the federal government, NLC president, Ayuba Wabba, told reporters that the decision to suspend the industrial action was taken after agreements were reached and documents signed. “Having reached this position and agreements signed, the proposed strike action is hereby suspended,” he said. Efforts to resolve the disagreement between government and labour initially suffered a set back on Monday as both parties failed to reach consensus on the minimum wage.
